just for fun

There are those things that just make you raise your eyebrows and think to yourself. "what? seriously??" And I am going to share a few of those moments that we've had with you now.

One of these would be the obsession with Halloween. We mentioned before that Chuseok is the biggest Korean holiday - and it is nationally, but in our school they are blowing Halloween out of the water. Everyday at lunch we listen to kiddy music while they eat, and since the beginning of October they have been creepy versions of good children's songs all turned into weird skeleton and ghost songs. I wouldn't be surprised if I heard jingle bells turned into wicked witch something or other. Not only that but they are already beginning to decorate the school with things and we have a big Halloween party on a Friday night for the kids. This party includes a "Scary Room" that they have to go in and get completely freaked out by one of the American teachers hiding in a big black coffin with a scream mask on. It sounds to me like the whole place is totally decked out like a haunted house and stuff. The teachers from last year told us that when the kids got thrown into the coffin with the teacher who was in a costume they were crying and freaking out - but they make them do it anyway, and the kids hated that teacher for months because of the scary room. So it will be an interesting October and an interesting Halloween.

Also right now the country is in Kimchi crisis. Kimchi is fermented spicy cabbage that is served with every meal. If it isn't served with a meal the Koreans don't know what to do. It is such a staple and comes free at most restaurants. Well the country is currently in crisis because the amount of cabbage is down. People are apparently freaking out about not getting their kimchi fix. I tried it one time and thought it was so horrible I probably won't try it again. I also can't handle spicy though. Jon likes it okay mixed with some rice or something. Read more here if you are interested or just want a giggle at the difference in culture. Kimchi Crisis

So this is seriously a flash card I had to use for my 3 year old kids today!

We made little guns for science class and they shot little pieces of styrofoam, which the kids loved, but still - gun? Really?

One last one for the day is that when it is a birthday and we have a cake in the teachers room (or when someone just brings one, mom's do this often) they don't cut the cake and we each get a piece. No. We grab our chopsticks and everyone just goes after the thing. It gets totally destroyed. You just stick your chopsticks in there anywhere you want, even right in the middle, and pull your bite off and eat it and go in for another hit. I felt like we were lions around a dead animal or vultures or something just demolishing the cake in minutes. It was almost an eat or be eaten feel, even though it was just cake.. but if you wanted some you had to be quick - those korean girls can eat!!!

  1. I can't believe they throw the kids into the coffin! So do you guys have to do that? Can you just hug them and tell them it's okay? Those poor babies! The Kimchi article was interesting to say the least...crazy!

  2. "Seriously?" is right. . . I can't believe they threw screaming, crying little kids into a coffin just for fun. And the gun flash card, that's just plain weird. I'd hears about Kimchi before, I didn't know that it was such a big deal though, WOW, they really love them some Kimchi.
